Homemade videos gone good

Normally I'm not big with fan videos, but I came across 'Undeclared' on YouTube. I'm really glad someone's made a video for it finally, the Dodos really should make this official!

And there's also a really cute version of Vampire Weekend's 'White Sky' that kind of reminds me of Plan B's 'No Good'

But best of all, what really made me cry and laugh out loud at the same time is this video. Officially Flaming Egg's first ever, yes, it's self-titled!

How silence could be so funny and so so cute I don't know!

Interview Idols

I hardly do interviews myself any more... Maybe the fear of people have completely taken over me and somehow I get more and more intimidated to do them myself (now that I have Gemma!)... But if I were completely brave to do anything, would I want to be like Nardwuar or Ushi?

It was Siobhan Fahey who introduced me to Ushi on Youtube... She interviewed Siobhan's favourite singer Melanie Safka. Now I don't really know who Melanie is but I have to say this is the most amusing interview I've ever seen! Can I be more like this please?

Best and Worst Music VDO Awards

Honestly, if MTV could do it, so can I on... on my own on Good Friday where my only guest of honour is a cat called Michael de Babioshka.

Let's start with the best one, I know it's only the beginning of the month but it looks like this could be the best thing anyone will get to see in the next 28 days already! Phantogram, SUPERSWEET's favourite new band, with their new single 'Mouthful of Diamonds' (hmmm.... wouldn't that be nice?) - their video is just so alien-like I wanted to cry when I first saw it. I once went to an amazing gig where someone in the crowd kept yelling, "Seriously, how did you do that?" to the band. And I was like... what a thing to be shouting out. But now I'm going through the same motion... How did Phantogram do that? It's so good, so beautiful, powerful and mysteriously seductive! I'm in love right now. BRAVO!

And now let's skip all the way to the worst one. Just like Eric Prydz's 'Call On Me', Grum's 'Can't Shake This Feeling' is another interpretation of the infamous and attention-seeking (but works every time) "sex sells" method. However, before you think I'm torturing our office cat with a facelift. It's only because Michael got too squeamish to watch and I've had to force her. How demeaning can this get? Surely even Terry Richardson would disapprove!

But all in all, thanks to both. Now I have seen everything!

Liars Liars Liars

My month-long "field trip" in Los Angeles is coming to an end. But here's a quick recap in pictorial triplets...

1) I managed to trap Julian in a box. He really wants to get out and if for some reason he doesn't make it with the band on tour next month, you know where to find him.
2) I took Aaron out to the countryside, it was a long drive, but there he bonded with this sweet retired greyhound. We named him Lionel. You can check Aaron's documentary here (actually, his documentary that I learned to edit for the first time!).

3) Behind Angus' back, we all met up for a very special Valentines date. It's Liars and Pink Dollaz meeting for the first time after having collaborated on the opening track 'Scissor'! There was a big photoshoot in a huge studio. That's all I'll say for now.

Enough babbling! All of this is because I can't stop confessing my love for the band. They might have said it a thousand times, now it's my turn, Liars I love you, and thank you for the Guest Editing spot for SUPERSWEET this March!

If you love them as much as me, keep checking SUPERSWEET for 1000 times more Liars fun by Liars themselves! This magazine is forever theirs!

School of Seven Bells' Unfinished Business

Right, 2009 is about to end and I personally don't like to leave things hanging and unfinished. What I'm about to finish is other people's business with me. I love SVIIB dearly, but guys, you suck...

Easy question: give us 2 music videos that you like and a short explanation why. Alley was the only one that got back to me, like... 6 months ago!

So this is too unofficial and unfinished to go in the website now, without further delays, here's the half-arsed team effort by School of Seven Bells and their cool video, 'My Cabal'.

Aljandra Deheza (vocals, guitar): 'My Cabal' was one of the first SVIIB songs ever to be imagined, conjured, carved out of churning moment in time. It's written as an exchange of letters between two characters - Cabal and Camarilla. The song is excavated artifacts from a tumultuous love affair between two symbiotic facets of one personality. We had gotten a ton of submissions for the video, but David Mullet's was the only one that addressed the idea of different perspectives as part of one entity. His partner pretty much invented this crazy stitching technique, that makes it look like the video was recorded in a single long shot, but in reality, they took video from a bunch of different angles and fused them together. Our friend Choltida let us borrow a bunch of wicked pieces from the SUPERSWEET Shop for the shoot. Thank yooouuuuuu, Choltida!!!! We shot on one of our only days off in a 71 date tour. Love love how it turned out. Now, if we could only convince them to shoot a whole tour...........

Fever Ray: When I Grow Up

Alejandra: Watching this video is such a deliciously jarring experience. What an amazing piece of art - EVERYTHING about it- the beautiful future primitive alien of a girl, the colors and the immediate grip of the scenery, THE SONG!! Karin Dreijer Andersson could make a mob of angry bees fly in formation, whilst caring a sleeping baby, with her voice if she wanted. It's that commanding.

Telepathe: So Fine

Alejandra: Two things here. The colors and the dance sequence. Wait, and Melissa and Busy. That's four. One of the things that I love about this video, is how each item in the shot, no matter how seemingly mundane (eggs, milk, half eaten fruit......) wears its colors so vibrantly. She's just making food, but it looks like a party. I love that whole idea of ritual/routine = ceremony/celebration. Then, the girls bust out into a dance routine. Why isn't there more of these things in videos? They make me so happy.

There you have it. Now I can end this year in peace!

Fiona Flanagan

I wish I looked as cool as Fiona circa Hearts of Fire, surrounded by Bob Dylan, Ronnie Wood and Rupert Everett! And look at her clothes and big hair! Man!!

Meet our Guest Eds!

Now that Gemma's posted about her obsession, I feel I should do one too. Since last month, I've been stalking the Raveonettes like hell. Why? Because I was dying to get them to guest edit our October issue!

And when I say stalking, I literally mean that. Met up with the band the day after their London show, flew out to NYC - "accidentally" bumping into Sune again at Heathrow on the way. Then went to see Autolux - "casually" bumping into Sune again at the Bowery Ballroom. He's a great great photographer as you will see in our Art Gallery Part 1, and you'll definitely get to see all the other sides of the band as we go on.

Now I'm out in LA, apparently flying out on the same day as Sharin too, though my groupie radar wasn't strong enough to track her down but I felt her in spirit. The new album In and Out of Control is so good it hypnotises me to lose all of the control and give it over to them. So there you have it, I'm introducing our first ever Guest Eds in the most psychotic and schizophrenic way possible which means you really need to check out how much I'm obsessing right now. We have poll, TV, art, music, fashion and even some hot shit tabloid gossip... all about them this month!

Enjoy, but don't go crazy like me.

The Dodos @ Bush Hall

Me and Tiffany went to see the Dodos together last Thursday and it's the best gig I've seen so far in 2009! Here's my crap bootleg of 'This is a Business' off the new album, Time to Die. And if you want to hear what Tiffany thinks, you can click and read about it here.

We need to get them to do more fun things for us next time! It's been too fun every time and now my life is a little dull... Save me the Dodos!

Oh my god, are you serious?

As ridiculous as it looks, I think our lovely Tiffany Tondut will like this a lot!

The Dodos: De-mericted and ruled ‘nay ok’

Here’s our version of The Dodos IV unedited. It’s more confusing than scary. After SS played it back in the office, we realized what an odd version of the game emerged! Logan copied everything Meric said and Meric’s words didn’t make any sense. Both boys should have been penalized. What is up with ‘bangers’ after Longform? And while we’re on the subject, what the feck is Longform? We would also like to penalize Logan for not complying with game rules, whereby he related his words to ones that didn’t come before him. ‘Telephone poles’ relates to Wichita (the label's logo), but not to ‘family’. This makes Logan a ‘cheater’, to which we respond ‘lame’. What comes after lame? The Dodos. (They said it, not us…) But because they both dressed up for the shoot, we forgive them and love them once again.

And you can see our official version of this here, then you will see how much editing is needed!
