ATP by Matt Groening Tweetathon

So some of you might know, I went to the ATP last weekend and did hour by hour on-site tweets. It wasn't easy, I don't talk to myself all the time that much but it was pretty interesting to have to busy myself all the time so I had things to tell. If you missed it, we had two cool guest tweets and here's the highlights of my past weekend with pictures. Follow us (or me, basically) at @supersweet!

SS @ SXSW in SIX Mins!

Dead dirty and inescapable from the bearded to-the-brim residents, Austins pied piper music heritage led greedy fans, industry hippies and SUPERSWEET's Gemma Dempster for March's SXSW Music Conference 2010.

Raking in the wonderfully pissy hoards of queuing freeloaders for the daily parties, or the elitist who darken SXSW badge-only events at night; we snaked through both realms, grasping every morsel of fresh and tarnished bands for our bite-size video review.

The highlights? Stalking Adam Green down a pastoral suburban street to commandeer footage of his underwear; rolling down a barbed wire hill to secretly break in for a Surfer Blood show; catching Woody Harrelson slurping eyes at Hole's Love, and bumping into a surprisingly short Sean Lennon. The result? A shamefully gimmicky video called SXSW in SIX Minutes, gah, now we didn't want to gloat too much did we?

SXSW in SIX Minutes Line Up: Adam Green, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Chew Lips, Hole, Liars, Local Natives, Marina and the Diamonds, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Phantogram, Pivot, School of Seven Bells, Soko, Stricken City, Thurston Moore, and Warpaint

Good Shoes, Good Shoes, oh, and more Good Shoes.

Yes, Good Shoes are our BAND OF THE MONTH, but sometimes, I think our best intentions can fall into the OTT category. Though we've reached our limit of a GS's natural high it doesn't mean you can't frivolously get excited over our month of worship:

Professionalism: Isaac Howlett

Isaac Howlett is SUPERSWEET's loyal writer since our analogue days, he had a long chain of gigs before Christmas to review: Datarock, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Modest Mouse, A Place to Bury Strangers and the Raveonettes. Not a bad job after all, is it?

But we only started to notice his Facebook where he was posting things pre- and post-gigs. Here's some example...

Isaac Howlett has just left for Shepherd's Bush Empire to see the mighty Modest Mouse. He's called Isaac too.

Some Pretty Circus Seal

After hours of enduring the pissing rain and gusty wind that almost froze my spinal bone, I stumbled upon this graffiti just off Carnaby Street.
A circus seal getting ready for the show, isn't it? Vanity, O Vanity! Thanks to the rain, this is the most fucked-up snapshot I could manage.

For those you haven't got it, this is a new work by BANKSY, an pseudo-anonymous, Bristol-born street artist. I did an article about him a while ago. I'm soon going back for a proper look at the seal.

BANKSY I <3 YOU XXX

BLOOD RED SHOES: Who (and where) are ya?

At the CroBar CroBar, CroBar...

Blood Red Shoes are back and looking shit-hot, readily giving away freebie single 'Colours Fade' (available from bloodredshoes.co.uk), and even putting on a intimate show last night at The Cro Bar. Sounds all rather too good to be true right?

Firstly, what a sausage-fest Cro Bar was, if it wasn't the odd penis in your back, then it was someones neat Jack Daniels dribbling down your shoulder at the tiny bloody tiny venue. But of course, it's a great sign for Blood Red Shoes to easily fill a venue after their much deserved break, and what a way to return. Their new songs still are too fresh to really get a much-loved feel for them, but the memorable 'Light Up' and Placebo-esque, 'Colours Fade' were thick with dirty angered electric guitar from red-lipped lady Laura-Mary Carter and shuddering percussional whacks by the guiltless Steven Ansell, and just from those tracks I seriously can't wait to hear the record.

Nevertheless, it was an interesting show, from the loud bellows of "TURN UP THE VOCALS" to my own desperate shouts "Where are you? I can't see you?", and BRS kept the conversation going with cheeky requests for some whisky to the audience, and from a silent crowd response Laura aptly declared "Who Are You?" to the wishful thinker. And after many tri-hard jumping attempts, I did managed to glimpse Steven's blonde curls and Laura's newly dyed hair through the a pyramid of sweaty armpits, just to make sure I was in fact watching the right band.

So the tour junkies are back and what sounds like a much heavy record. So pull out the earplugs and get ready to destroy your remaining strips of ear-drum for Blood Red Shoes' thrashing t-shirt tearing return.

The SS Workout "SWEAT WITH PYRAMIDDD/STARFUCKER"

Formly known as seducers of the cosmic variety, Starfuckers they have transformed (as of two month ago) to a less arrogant spell-check inducing title Pyramiddd. So at Camden's Flowerpot venue, after delays all round, (thank you "medical emergency" on Northern line), I bopped to the US wonders on their first ever tour in the UK.

A lot like Daft Punk on steroids, the lazer popping, sweat band wearing act were just so darn athletic, all I wanted to do was strip, don my trusty sports-bra and spandex leggings combo and start a workout there an' then (ugh, if only I didn't have that little remaining self-respect left). But Pyramiddd really have some serious moves to get in shape to, so I got my tinkering brain to work and compiled wicked workout inspired by Pyramiddd's energetic show. NOW, GET YOUR SWEAT ON!

"The Schizophrenic" (WARM UP):
Find your inner calm....then listen to the voices in your head...now you are ready!

"The Keyboard Thrust"
Get those digits in keyboard playing form, stick your arms out moving up and down, then in a repressed sexual motion, move your pelvis in and out at the same time. Repeat 8x

"The Assaulting Air Guitar"
Hold your imaginary guitar, now swing left to right like you've never swung before! But remember not to go all the way round, that's just showing off...Repeat 10x

"The Distorted Yelp"
For those who don't have a voice-altering microphone, smack both hands over your mouth and scream, shout or sing. The result? To sound like a kitty being thrown at the electronic fan.Yes please. Repeat 6x

"The Pouncing Power-Walk"
Not just running on the spot, your arms have a to flail about out-of-time with your legs in a power-walking pose, then, if you are feeling super ballsy, pounce on fellows in the street and stare them out until they join in too!

"The Cyndi Lauper" (WARM DOWN)
Breathe, Stretch your ears, point your left arm to the sky, and shriek "Girls Just Want To Have Fun". Then sway side to side, left foot touching right, and then vice versa. Warning: You will experience a teenage flashback in the process...

Now go get physical and check out their last remaining gigs!

Do Good Shoes have No Hope...No Future?

THE UNOFFICIAL REVIEW: Good Shoes, No Hope, No Future.

It’s always a strange and wonderful experience watching SUPERSWEET’s much loved bands "mature", grow facial hair and in the case of Good Shoes’ Rhys Jones drop some weighty bullocks and develop a deepened vocal charm that old and new fans cannot refuse. We love Good Shoes that much we even have a mention in their album cover credits for the ominously titled new album, No Hope, No Future, so in return couldn’t wait to give our unofficial review of the album, Why? (All together now) Because that’s ‘The Way My Heart Beats’!

With one swift bite, Good Shoes have gobbled up their past Think Before You Speak success, and given a hearty well-needed vomit to bring about the sobering promise of their new album, and its blooming marvelous. Each track convulses in ways you simply can’t expect, from the metronome tickling track ‘I Know’, pushing all minor keys as thunderous as an intensely melodic tornado, to the despairing ‘Everything You Do’ transforming Rhys' voice into a bluesy serenading conjurer of wise words.

Now, before you make a mess tearing your ears off your head wondering if the Good Shoes sound has disappeared, have no fear, the four-piece still keep intact their “music to dance to” legacy, but coated with unbelievable skill. ‘Do You Remember’, ‘Times Change’ and ‘1000 Miles An Hour’ maintain the catchy guitar and vocal appeal Good Shoes fans’ desire, but overhauled with resonating layers and quirks to keep you salivating throughout.

Wonderfully warped with skillful maturity, Good Shoes Oh-My-God outdo themselves with the following killer tracks, from the electronic guitar frenzied solos in ‘Our Loving Mother in A Pink Diamond' to the ironic and promiscuous lyrical drips in ‘Under Control’. Much like the horny beast in ‘Under Control’, “always hungry/and never satisfied”, SS will always keep lusting for the wising of the Morden haters, even if they all grow up without us...

No Hope, No Future will (finger-crossed) be released January 18th next year.

Tracklisting:
The Way My Heart Beats
Everything You Do
I Know
Under Control
Do You Remember

Good Shoes live!

I've been meaning to talk about this since last week but things got a little crazy and now my lovely friends Good Shoes are on tour. Some of you will have already seen them!

Gemma will do a preview of the new album No Hope, No Future for you some time this week. We've all heard it, exclusively for the SS office, we all love it so much that we make it a daily ritual to listen to it first thing in the morning everyday.

Last week, I stalked them all the way to their rehearsal space to watch them live (my only chance this year as I'll be away by the time they play ULU on Dec 12th). My favourite is 'City By the Sea', I didn't seem to hear Steve's cute guitar lines on the record but much more live, and as brilliant as it is, 'Under Control' will always make me laugh at how disgusting Rhys is. 'I Know' is also a really nice change and a more grown up approach for them, weirdly, it doesn't sound like Rhys at all.
Here's a few of my crappy iPhone pictures. Krittiya took better ones, maybe we'll air them later once she's developed her films...
Sharing mic is a very in thing right now, and so is Haggerston rehearsal space, according to them here. In case you don't know... We love them so much we've made them our Jury of the Month this month!

Where the Wild Things Are

I just came back from watching Where the Wild Things Are by Spike Jonze. I don't remember liking anything this much in a really long time, my heart was racing with joy and excitement. It's got a really quirky take on the way of looking at things with the purest bits of your heart, not your eyes and brain. And does it have the best visuals anyone's seen in a really long time. Let's not forget also the really atmospheric soundtrack by Karen O (and the Kids) and Carter Burwell.

My personal favourite scene? When Max is riding the ship along the waves of his blue blanket, my heart breaks.

Don't want to glove up? Check out our Birth Control Playlist!

While a usual day in the office does leave us all feeling like we want to cry from exhaustion, we do have our crazy moments, especially with our resident poet is set loose on the long list of random messages we receive. Yes, you’ve probably guessed this is going to go in a sexual direction, but don’t worry I wouldn’t lower the tone by talking about those frequent emails about how to engorge your member, this time it’s about music that puts you off the baby-making, for the pro-choice fans out there, the ultimate ‘BIRTH-CONTROL’ playlist. I’ve narrowed it down to ten contraceptive-inducing tracks that aim to prevent those little swimmers procreating the world. Listen to these if you don’t want bay-bies! (Warning: Not 100% Effective).

1. Adam Ant: Sex Apart from the blatant sex reference, this song is a bit of a mood killer. When you are getting down to business, only to have the new-romantic prince Adam Ant, blare out “S-EEXX” at you and the erotically visual lyrics “My body is an ocean of twisted white debris”, (about to explode?). Wow, definitely a turn on. My favourite part is the backing vocals whispering “virginity's no crime”, yet why does it sound like a threat to pillage young teens?

2. Jeff Buckley: Halleluiah So many of you may disagree with me and say “woah, it’s a beautiful cover”, which it is just that, but while bumping uglies? Apart from making one of you cry, and it’s really not gender specific, the over-whelming flood of tears usually isn’t helped by the unrequited love reminded by dear Jeff, yeah, great anti-sex song.

3. Liars: Broken Witch With the brilliant jutting percussion infusions with scratching guitar, this song almost sounds like a sacrificial dance for death of unborn babies, it’s menstruation time! Using lyrics “WE ARE THE ARMY YOU SEE THROUGH THE RED HAZE OF BLOOD BLOOD BLOOD BLOOD”, I discovered Liars’ intention of this song as the perfect birth-control, by welcoming the “blooood” before you even get started with the making of the love! Hurrah!

4. Robots In Disguise: Sex Has Made Me Stupid When I listened to this track by the electro-Mighty Boosh girls, I’m sure that they are singing about raping a man, or so inebriated to know what’s going on. With lyrics like “Another act of aggression/I want you on the floor/Get down go”, after professing how sex has made you stupid, no amount of domination will get a partner going if you are just too stupid to do it.

5. Plan B: Charmaine Ok given that this British Eminem is clever when he recounts his narratives in some ways, getting horizontal while a man (other than your partner) is talking to you about his lovemaking is never sexy, especially when he retorts “Whilst kissing, yeah, she’s doing me properly”. This horny rap-star easily sucks the romance out of the situation, with his slang-terms and cheesy bass line, but its pinnacle moment is as Plan B finds out "blud, that girl’s fourteen!", easily scaring your lover away from climax, all in frightful wonderment about your actual age.

6. Flight of the Conchords: Business Time I don’t care that it’s a meant to be a comedic track, the duo brilliantly beat reality of couples sex into your mind switching off any romantic notions you may endeavour. This time listening to this song will get you both into giggles and definitely more of a fun birth-control track!

7. Metronomy: You Could Easily Have Me A slightly off-putting number, Metronomy's title immediately brands any partner as a bone-jumping nymphomaniac and when the music kicks in, the assaulting electronics blare in the background disrupting any of your passionate rhythms. This track could scare off prospective babies, yet possibly not the most effective birth-control for teenagers who are happy to listen to screaming electro and drown out thoughts of parents listening outside the door.

8. Talking Heads: Making Flippy Floppy Wow I love you Talking Heads. With a title (twisted for my benefit) about summoning male impotence, this is one way enjoy sex for a fleeting un-climaxing moment. While some of you may curse the badgering interpretation of this song, you just have to see the lyrics “Nothing strikes your fancy/Nothing turns you on”, reminding any listener ready to get porkin’ the ultimate pressure of actually knowing what will turn your lover on. Ha!

9. Joy Division: Love Will Tear Us Apart I think I’ve nailed it with this one, (woo pun time!), with the ominous title a tricky and literal way to stop pregnancy, the harsh lyrics of melancholic betrayal soon become etched on your mind about how love, relationships and sex can all fail: “Do you cry out in your sleep/All my failings expose?/Get a taste in my mouth/As desperation takes hold”. But, don’t let me sway you, if you enjoy hate-sex and up-the-duff repercussions keep listening to Ian Curtis’ fertile voice.

10. The Raveonettes: Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed) Of course our Band of The Month gets a feature in this contraceptive playlist! Unless you are a Whoopi Goldberg fan of her definitions of rape, the real kind being “rape-rape”, you probably won’t want to get down and dirty to the bittersweet threats of this Raveonettes song if you have any doubt that your partner might not be willing. Plus, if you are doing the old “rape-rape”, Raveonettes (and society) will hunt you down!

Behind the Scenes: BESTIVAL

Whoa! SUPERSWEET’s been all over the place this last weekend, with the Ed whirling herself off to fashion central in NY, I’ve been destroying my eardrums and browning my face like a crème brulee in the lovely Isle of Wight. While you may chortle at its lack of glamour, SUPERSWEET’s covered the island’s much hailed Bestival welcoming anyone with a colourful identity crisis for the space themed costume parties...and keep those eyes peeled for the in-depth review of the festival on SUPERSWEET! For now, here are some snippets of the musical mayhem I got up to!

After ploughing through what costumes to decorate myself with, I decided with the loveable red jumpsuit wearing Mork aka Mork and Mindy! However bumping into a male Mork only realised how poor my delightfully homemade costume was, well I suppose you can decide... I did get cheered in the costume catwalk and hugged by a sweaty Chewbacca look-i-like!

While running around searching for the Hidden Disco in the forestry labyrinth, I began to doubt my journalistic skills until I ran to new-wave soul band Hockey, bear hugging them for their fab interview earlier and snapping a cheeky photo of beauties; vocalist Benjamin Grubin and bassist Jeremy Reynolds. Feeling I’d proven my journalism worth, we cheered Happy Birthday to Jeremy; yet with a quick turn I swiftly lost myself in the woods and failed as a simple festival goer, missing Cagedbaby at the Hidden Disco!

Hockey wasn’t the only band we managed to get chatting too; in the upcoming review we’ve recapped horror stories from Kitty, Daisy and Lewis, Chew Lips and their sexual party tricks and Casiokids rocked up for a late night acrobatic finale with the lead singer face painted in the style of a space cat (or as the band pointed out repeatedly, definitely a mouse). In the press tent we overheard a band accidentally slipping a racial slur, and while struggling up the hill home I spotted lead singer of The Big Pink, Robbie Furze wearing a cropped fur gilet and white sunglasses looking rather pleased with himself.

Anyone have any stories to share with SUPERSWEET? Comment below, we want to hear your adventures too, you could even get a mention the article...only if you make us laugh into incontinence of course!
