Fuffology

God knows how you pronounce the word "Fuffology" but we should jump up and down three times as Jeffrey Lewis' Fuff comics have now been iPhonised!

Simply put, it's the cool kids of Lush Comics that did it, and this time for free!

Why are we excited? Well, since the day Jeffrey drew us a very cute comic booklet at Leeds Fest few years ago, I became a fan.

One of the first pages you'll see, is this...

And then there's zombies!

Though I haven't had time to read any of it at all, thanks to the big load of SUPERSWEET, this page caught my eye...

Dad must have some good stories to tell...

If you're still wanting more, they also have Jeff's Worldwide Comix Scavenger Hunt Vol. 1 and 2 for sale (for only $0.99 each) and we will probably be getting them once we've reached the end of my iPhone's Fuff!

The Alchemy of threeASFOUR

Last night I flew in especially to check out threeASFOUR, aka the only show in town worth all that trouble. The show, held at Milk Studios, was neatly choreographed with smoke machines and green laser beams everywhere from corner to corner and at times hitting on the models' shoes creating the glowing shoe illusion!

All girls came out at once, each represented an element - tin, silver, gold and so on; and that's how each outfit was based on. The shapes are very much threeASFOUR, but that extra oomph came from the sparkly work of tubular beads that create not just the patterns on the garments but also define the silhouettes within.

My favourite bit? The girl in the centre, "Gong Girl", Barbara di Creddo. She's the mix of all elements, including the gong! These were the short magical 10 minutes to die for. Well done threeASFOUR, we love you guys!

A Child of the Jago

Not quite the clothing store, but THE original Jago, Nick Jago. He has now returned to the loving embrace of SUPERSWEET land with his honest opinion of what's in and what's out. We even had time to take him up on the big wheel by the beach for a very L'Uomo Vogue style shoot!

Buy a Damian Hirst 'Nothing Matters' blanket for bullshit snuggles.

Featuring icons from Damien Hirst’s New Religion series and large enough for a double bed, you can dribble all over this 100% merchandised cashmere non-refundable blanket, or as we call it, a 'blankey'. Made in Scotland on a 1000 year old Jacquard loom and finished byTracy Emin's left hand. Each has a ' purled' fringe, lest we forget Hirst is immortal, and 2 New Religion labels for peace of pretentious mind.

Using techniques similar to those used 150 years ago (lazy bastards), fabric and colour are built up in layers like a jam and peanut-butter sandwich with hundred and thousands sprinkled on top, and given clarity and depth by the use of fermented bullshit, pure Scottish water (no kidding) and cloth woven from the finest of pubic fibres. Part of the finishing process involves air-drying by a flock flying beetles and paper-pressing the blankets to ensure justifying the price tag.

Perfect for cuddling up with your donner kebab while watching Gay Rabbit Chat.

Available from www.othercriteria.com £975.00

* The above image is not Hirst's blanket, but a figurative abstract pictorial representation. Ahhh we need to go home and eat dinner.

Women bore quickly? Lynx Stinks...

Some people at SUPERSWEET are puking over Lynx, whose latest ad campaign declares that “Women are easily bored,” so men, you’d better run out and snap up the latest multi-fragranced spray in the irresistible Lynx ‘female-seductor’ range before your chick gets fickle. Which she'll undoubtedly do every 5 minutes because either she's a brainless nympho or because as a man, you're so dull and ugly there's nothing interesting about you except for the latest scent you're sporting.

Lord, have mercy on the sexist dim-witted oiks who sacrifice self-respect for sales. There’s enough of them in the world, but why not fatten the proverbial goose and stuff intelligence a bit further, hey Lynx?

The age-old question “what do women want?” can be easily answered without the need for slick packaging in a stream of deceptively innovative products that apparently aid men in pulling off our knickers. What women want is a blend of intelligent top notes combined with bottom notes of interest, passion and respect. Not chocolate and cream fights in our panty-hose.

Civilisation has been successfully mating since time began, and although Lynx smells better than sweat, what really puts us off is the stink of ignorant arrogance. Did they really think women and men alike would NOT be insulted by this base-tabloid insinuation? Perhaps Lynx should revert to its original brand name ‘Axe’ and cut off its own phallus. Cockmongers…

Hand Me My Oscar: Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll

Yes, (hold the applause) yours truly, is to appear as a spikey haired punk groupie, looking rather drugged up in a scene for the upcoming biopic of Ian Dury, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll coming out this January 8th.

Granted my acting consisted of sitting on a couch for five hours, refusing the fake weed rolly's because I would only embarrass myself with my squinted eyes-mouth-I-don't-smoke look and gawking at Andy Serkis unprofessionally hoping he would splutter out "Gollum, Gollum". And the highlight of this experience? A definite flirty compliment from the supporting actor: "You had really pretty hair before...now you look like you've stuck your finger in a socket" What. A. Charmer.

So if you see a really narky punk girl shouting at the said support actor for standing in front of a viewing of Spartacus, please feel free to boo and hiss.

Some Pretty Circus Seal

After hours of enduring the pissing rain and gusty wind that almost froze my spinal bone, I stumbled upon this graffiti just off Carnaby Street.
A circus seal getting ready for the show, isn't it? Vanity, O Vanity! Thanks to the rain, this is the most fucked-up snapshot I could manage.

For those you haven't got it, this is a new work by BANKSY, an pseudo-anonymous, Bristol-born street artist. I did an article about him a while ago. I'm soon going back for a proper look at the seal.

The Lady in Very Bright Colours

Guess what, I am not talking about SS Editor-in-Chief.

'Tis she "JULIE VERHOEVEN" .. the one on the right!
On the left is Angelique from MU where Julie's latest exhibition "Man Enough to Be a Woman" is housed. She rivals Julie in her loveliness :-D

Back to Julie, she is an artist, fashion designer and icon. She draws, paints, makes this world a much brighter and lovelier place! Julie had her own label Gibo, which had much enticed SS Editor-in-Chief, but sadly, it was closed down.

Enough said, I feel you must have come across Julie's works, if not from LV, Mulberry, Versace, Galliano, from the "Interview" SUPERSWEET published a week or so ago.

So, why am I babbling about her now? Well, I am just back from her book launch (why are people so keen on book-launching this week?). The book, titled "A Bit of Rough", is a compilation of Julie's illustrations currently exhibited at MU. For you who haven't been there, having the book in your hands is kinda great in a sort of way that speeds up the process of you booking a cheap flight to the Netherlands! Here's a sample.
"Like A Player" Courtesy of MU/ZINGERpresents

There's a bit of a twist at the book launch, of course. By that, I don't just mean free booze but Julie's limited edition "A Bit of Rough" and the complementary short film.
The books are as colourful as the rainbow. Some are playful and quirky; others dark and raw. My shitty phone camera hasn't done them justice at all. They're reasonably priced-not like them Prada ones-considering that there are only 40 of them available!

I left quite early - I had an engagement elsewhere- and I noticed a few copies had flown off the shelves. If you want one, ring up (or visit) Donlon Books 210 / Shop 3, near Bethnal Green Tube, for more info. If they're sold out, I'm happy to auction my copies off at a very, very nastily high price :-P

PS: A copy of the Prada Book landed on my door this morning, complimentary of Sandrine. So, I'm taking my previous bitching back.

Fondazione Prada Book Launch

Last night I was at Bond Street's Prada for the "Fondazione Prada" book launch.

The boutique was transformed into a rather funky space with hundreds of book sleeves on the shelves, mannequins in the exclusive S/S 10 resort collection, green neon lights and loud music. It was packed with fashion designers in the likes of Mr Chris Kane and Mr Aggugini, artists, celebs, socialites and media peeps, eye candy servers, and surprisingly friendly bouncers! I didn't spot anybody worth bragging about - just one actor I admire who turns out to be more camp than I. Isn't that great? Bah!

Well, well. I was there for the Book.
Very briefly, Fondazione Prada is a collaborative project between Muccia Prada, Patrizio Bertelli and Germano Celant with its focus on the trio's shared interest in fashion, design, art and architecture. And, this book, a.k.a. the "Bible" for Prada fanatics, "retraces and represents the multivalent aspects of Prada" from 1995 till present time.

Yes, the book is very thick, gilded with tons of images. I was really excited that I would get to peep at, sniff, caress it at last.
I (and Mr D) spent the rest of the evening chasing trays of canapes - pan-fried foie gras, juicily grilled steak, roast lamb with mushroom jus, seared scallop with risotto nero, etc. The food was LUSH!!! The drinks were alright - mid-range champagne, cocktail and non-alcoholic pear juice. The last one was especially for an alcohol light-weight like me.

Not drinking much was actually a smart idea because half-way through the night the queue for the loo - there was only one unisex loo to share - became much longer than the queue to get into the boutique.

And, the look on pretentious people's faces when they're on the verge of pee-bursting is just ... priceless! LOL

As for the book, I managed to grab my lovely Sandrine, the Bond Street store manager, and using my being a decade-long loyal customer trick, started pleading for a free book. Sadly, the trick didn't work this time. Sandrine says these books only come in very limited edition and are priced at £90 each. What a mercenary bitch!

... Muccia Prada, I mean, not Sandrine :(

On the way out, a thought came swiftly into my head. Maybe I should just break into this glass boudoir and steal the book from these two discerning ladies.
Yet, looking at the beefy bouncers, I'd rather NOT.

Where the Wild Things Are

I just came back from watching Where the Wild Things Are by Spike Jonze. I don't remember liking anything this much in a really long time, my heart was racing with joy and excitement. It's got a really quirky take on the way of looking at things with the purest bits of your heart, not your eyes and brain. And does it have the best visuals anyone's seen in a really long time. Let's not forget also the really atmospheric soundtrack by Karen O (and the Kids) and Carter Burwell.

My personal favourite scene? When Max is riding the ship along the waves of his blue blanket, my heart breaks.

Johnny Foreigner: "Off With Their Heads!"

Calling all tea leaves, robbers, and lovers of a five finger discount! SS is at your mercy! Well, in all honesty, after hearing on the grapevine that ANOTHER band has had some of their musical equipment literally pinched from their clawing hands, I immediately wanted to join in the fruitful beheading. Happily passing Johnny Foreigner’s italicised frustrated message on to the thrifty gig-goer at their turbulent Leeds gig, I, with the band, challenge the unknown drunken soul, who got that ever bit to righteous and decided to take revenge on that chaotic night:

Hi, yesterday was the most YAY!!!/NO!! off our most YAY!!/NO!! tour yet. Parking tickets and powercuts and our guitars/amps/shoes falling apart, that was a point at the end of the show where I was floating around on my back in the top of the audience with a big dumb smile realising that all this is probably worth it. And then someone robbed my microphone and sort of tarnished the evening. I’m sick of whining musicians so I'll not dwell on us being another 100 quid down, but the sentimental value of that sm58 to the person who trustingly lent it to me isn't something we can replace by jacking up shirt prices or not eating for a couple of days. If you know our band, then you'll know which we'd sooner do, and the love in the room last night was proof to us that we're justified in skinting ourselves to do this band. I reckon some drunk kidlet took it in revenge for having to wait round while the venue fixed it's flux capacitor. well done, you really showed them. We're doing a free show in December, it'll probably be billed as an apology for last night but really we just love what we do, any excuse. If you bring us the severed head of the guy who robbed our mic, we'll give you our gin. We won't have much else to offer any more. Thx leeds, 99percent of you are wonderful xxx" Singer and guitarist Alexe.

Meet our Guest Eds!

Now that Gemma's posted about her obsession, I feel I should do one too. Since last month, I've been stalking the Raveonettes like hell. Why? Because I was dying to get them to guest edit our October issue!

And when I say stalking, I literally mean that. Met up with the band the day after their London show, flew out to NYC - "accidentally" bumping into Sune again at Heathrow on the way. Then went to see Autolux - "casually" bumping into Sune again at the Bowery Ballroom. He's a great great photographer as you will see in our Art Gallery Part 1, and you'll definitely get to see all the other sides of the band as we go on.

Now I'm out in LA, apparently flying out on the same day as Sharin too, though my groupie radar wasn't strong enough to track her down but I felt her in spirit. The new album In and Out of Control is so good it hypnotises me to lose all of the control and give it over to them. So there you have it, I'm introducing our first ever Guest Eds in the most psychotic and schizophrenic way possible which means you really need to check out how much I'm obsessing right now. We have poll, TV, art, music, fashion and even some hot shit tabloid gossip... all about them this month!

Enjoy, but don't go crazy like me.
